The 'Social Theatre' Housing

Standarchitecture participated in the 2011 Shenzhen Biennale with the ‘Social Theatre Housing’ project for Vanke at the NAI pavilion.

Concept
The design strategy for this project is to combine a number of basic small housing units together with a grand semi-outdoor public theatre-like space. The theatre space would serve as a great public living room for the building as well as for the entire community.

Unit Design
The design for the residential units is based on the concept of the shared wall. The division between each unit consists of a wide wall that works as an infrastructure where all the appliances and services are hidden until used. This maximizes the amount of available free space in the room.
There are two unit typologies; of 14 m² and 22 m². These units only differ in their depth, which is a consequence of the floor plan asymmetry created by the position of the corridor. The height and width of each unit follows a standard module layout of 2.8 m x 3 m which is projected onto the east and west façades. The area of each unit is enlarged by small balconies that enrich the quality of the interior space. 

Program Arrangement
The building program is organized through 6 levels. The first three levels accommodate commercial functions, with the possibility of having double height floors to enhance spatial quality and flexibility. The three top floors are residential.

Façade Design
The rigidity of the internal unit module is offset through the varied placement of balcony openings on the east and west facades. This cutting operation of solid and void gives a dynamic sense of rhythm to the façades and simultaneously operates to mask the placement of facilities required on the exterior of each room.

概念
本设计试图将一个类似剧场的大型半户外公共空间与一系列小型基本居住单元结合起来。这一“剧场空间”可作为住户及整个社区的大型公共客厅。

单元设计
住宅单元的设计以“共享的墙”为基本概念。相邻住宅单元之间由一道收纳所有设施与服务的厚墙分隔,从而达到室内空间的最大化。
住宅单元有14平米与22平米两种房型,它们只在进深上有所区别(因走廊的位置而形成的不对称平面布局)。单元高宽值以2.8米*3米的标准模数投影在建筑的东西立面上。每个单元所带的小型阳台增大了使用空间,也提高了室内空间的品质。

功能安排
建筑各功能分布于六层之间。一至三层作为商业用途,偶有双层通高空间穿插其间,提高了空间品质。四至六层均为住宅。

立面设计
阳台在东西立面上不规整的分布使得室内单元模数的严整感有所抵消。 这种对空间虚实的切割处理使得建筑立面的韵律更富有活力,也达到了隐藏各个房间室外设施的效果。
