A 500-meter-long wall encloses a row of two-story buildings that follow one another in a continuous series of white walls folded back to design compact volumes and internal courtyards. The entrance is located on the east side; a flight of steps inserted into the thickness of the boundary wall provides access to a footbridge that leads to the third floor of the first volume. Between the wall to the south and the row of buildings is set a dense thicket of bamboo, while the entire block is surrounded and traversed by canals.

Each opening between one building and the next has a different form and depth. Introverted spaces with varied functions (interiors, courtyards and entrance halls) are crossed and linked by bridges over small pools of water that run through the whole building and reinterpret the tradition of Suzhou, a city famed for its canals and stone bridges.

Xi'an City Wall Reintegration
Xi'an, 2009

The ancient defensive walls of the city of Xi'an, the capital of China for around a thousand years, date from the Ming Dynasty and are now the sole example of walls of a capital city to have survived in China after the destruction of Beijing's walls in the fifties. The boundaries of the city have expanded considerably over the course of the centuries and the walls, although preserved, are lost inside the dense urban grid characterized by shopping malls, hotels and large office blocks.

The project envisages a strategy of integration of the walls that is based on the three concepts of Cheng ("city"), Shi("street market") and ye ("wild nature"). A pedestrian zone runs along the inner perimeter of the walls in an area that will be characterized by traditional courtyard houses (tea and coffee houses and hostels); on the outside the program provides for the rehabilitation of the old canal and the laying out of a series of public parks and gardens.
